What is a health and safety policy?

A health and safety policy is a document that sets out your organisation's commitment, responsibilities, expectations and intentions are related to health and safety in your workplace. When creating a health and safety policy, some important things include:

  • Commitment from Management
  • Involvement of employees
  • Ensure the health and safety of employees is promoted
  • Protecting employees from hazards
  • Ensure you are complying with legislation

 

Tips for writing a health and safety policy:

  • Keep it current and review regularly - The legislation for your industry might be changing frequently.
  • Write the policy using words and terms that are easily understood, so that employees from all levels of the organisation can understand it
  • Ensure the H&S policy is displayed appropriately around the workplace
